Home Rain Gardens

a talk by Bob Mertens

Anyone living in this area knows that it can rain a lot! But did you know that at over 90 inches of rain per year, the county is the wettest in the state. A lot of this rainfall does not come as light showers but day long rain events supplemented by periodic “gully washers” that can do considerable damage to our gardens. Master Gardener Bob Mertens will present on how to create a rain garden on your property to help manage water run-off in an attractive way. The talk is sponsored by the Transylvania County Extension Master Gardeners and is part of the monthly program of talks and demonstrations that will interest Master Gardeners, amateur gardeners, and the public at large.

Bob will talk about how and where to locate a rain garden so that it collects rain water in an efficient manner. Other topics included will be size and capacity and what kind of amendments needed to be added to this area. You might need help with digging the hole and creating an overflow, then you can add soil, sand and rocks. Finally, Bob will suggest plants that will do well in a rain garden and in this area.

Bob Mertens is a Florida horticulturist retired from the UF/IFAS Extension Sarasota County. His passion for plants spans over 50 years during which he has grown hundreds of indoor plant varieties. His areas of specialty also include environmental horticulture, palms, landscape ornamentals, and landscape installation and maintenance. Mertens and his wife, Leslie, relocated to Brevard from Florida in 2017. They are both Extension Master Gardener℠ Volunteers of Transylvania County.

The talk is sponsored by the Extension Master Gardener℠ Volunteers of Transylvania County and will be on Tuesday May 14th, from 10 to 11.00 a.m., doors open at 9.30 a.m. The talk will held in the Rogow Room of the Transylvania Library in Brevard, 212 S.
