Dr. Luke Etchison, Aquatic Wildlife Diversity Coordinator, NC Wildlife Resources Commission, will enlighten us on the state of the invertebrates of the French Broad River watershed. A specialist in mussels and crayfish, he will introduce us to these important, but lesser-known residents of our local waterways.

EXPLORE! Invertebrates of the FBR Snorkeling Field Trip
05/19/23 2:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. Headwaters Outfitters, Rosman
The upper French Broad River (FBR) flows just outside of National Forest boundaries and is one of the oldest rivers in the world. This river snorkeling adventure offers many opportunities to observe numerous aquatic insects and other invertebrates such as the French Broad Crayfish, and maybe even the legendary and protected Hellbender salamander. Oxbow River Snorkeling will lead this event, there is a fee of $100 per person to participate

ACT! Invertebrates of the FBR Stream Assessment Day
05/12/23 10:00 a.m. – 05/12/23 12:00 p.m. Mills River, exact location to be announced closer to the event
Become a citizen scientist! We’ll be joining the Mills River Partnership for a macroinvertebrate stream assessment. This involves identifying aquatic insects that live in the stream and using those identifications to determine stream quality. Training will be provided.

LEARN! Vertebrates of the French Broad River Watershed

Mike Knoerr, Wildlife Biologist with the Natural Resources Conservation Service, will present: “Hellbenders and Bog Turtles: Natural history and conservation of a giant salamander and a tiny turtle in Western North Carolina”. Mike will improve our understanding of the status of these rare reptiles and amphibians, and address restoration projects that improve habitat conditions for our hellbenders and bog turtles.

EXPLORE! A Discussion about Fly Tying and Fishermen’s Impact

Jack Henderson, French Broad Paddle Trail Manager with Mountain True, will talk about the many challenges that the French Broad River watershed has come up against in the past, and the opportunities that are presented to us now to keep the river flowing in the right direction.

EXPLORE! A float on the French Broad River!
Friday, July 7, 1:00-4:00 French Broad River, meeting spot TBA
Let’s get on the river! Join us on a class 1 and 2 urban float on the French Broad River. Joining us will be Trevor Freeman from the Western North Carolina Historical Association talking about past challenges to the health of the French Broad River, and Jack Henderson of Mountain True talking about ways we are currently addressing these challenges to keep the river healthy. We will be using both inflatable rafts and kayaks, a fee is required.

ACT! Participate in a workday maintaining a French Broad River campsite
Saturday, July 8, 10:00-12:00 Banks of the French Broad River at Mud Creek
This service day with Mountain True will take place on one of the many riverside campsites on the French Broad River. We will work on repairing/replacing campsite equipment, picking up litter, and/or removing invasive plants in the peripheral areas.
