Transylvania County Master Gardener Advisory Board Monthly Meeting Minutes

August 26, 2024, 11:00 A.M. – 12:00 P.M.

Extension Conference Room

Attendees:  Betsy Bond, Mary Miller, Maryann Mickewicz, Bart Renner, Cindy Gilbert, Lani Leary, Brenda Doroski, Phyllis Cumings, Mary Ellen Farley

  1. Welcome and Call to Order. Betsy called the meeting to order at 11:00 a.m.
  1. Review/Approve July Minutes – Phyllis motioned; Mary 2nd; approved.
  1. Finance Report – Phyllis Cumings
    • Phyllis reported a July 24, 2024 balance of $7,694.05. August expenses included mulch and fall seeds; deposits included a $100 donation in memory of Gail Comer.
    • To honor Gail’s love of lavender, the Board will use the donation to buy new lavender plants for the Silvermont Herb Garden. Lani will ask her husband Rick to handcraft an appropriate garden sign. Maryann will create new herb and lavender labels for the garden bed.

  1. Great Southeast Pollinator Census 2024 Report Out – Cindy Gilbert
    • Cindy G. shared the following: we were fortunate with 2 wonderful weather days; information was given to 29 contacts; 10 EMGV were involved, 9 of whom took the census; 6 practice events were held prior to the event; and 29 EMGV were trained.
    • There were not many pollinators at the library. However, there were a lot of pollinators at Silvermont. Since patrons seemed to be “on a mission” at the library and the Ranger Station, it may make sense to focus on Silvermont next year.
    • The new EMGV shirts were effective in generating questions from the public.
  1. Update on the Plant This Not That project — Betsy
  • Betsy, Maryann, Cindy G. and Mary Ellen have picked out the plants (focus on dwarf natives) and identified the soil condition needs for this new demonstration bed (located in front of the compost bin). Two shrubs were purchased at New Leaf (20% off).
  1. Board Recruitment Status – Lani and Cindy G.
  • Lani and Cindy G. have recruited Rodney Holcomb and Lynn Bartosh to be the nominees for C0-Presidents.
  • TO DO: Update the website with the current list of board members. Update the written board position descriptions for current and future use.
  • Lani suggested the use of a board development feedback tool to capture strengths and weaknesses before transitioning to a new board in 2025.
  1. December 2024 graduation/dinner (see January 16 board meeting notes)
  • Maryann will check the availability of St. Philip’s for December 3.
  • Maryann will follow-up with Mindy Buford, Hospitality Committee to develop a budget for food.
  • Maryann will create a sign-up sheet for main and side dishes, salads, and fewer salads.
  • The event description will be slightly changed this year to describe a dinner instead of appetizers.
  1. Soil School at Brevard ES
  • Soil school will be held the 1st Thursday of each month March – May 1, 2025 at Silvermont.
  1. Ideas for Streamlining the Farmer’s Market Booth – Mary Ellen Farley
  • Create a substitute list and ask volunteers to find a sub if they need to cancel their shift.
  • Create a file folder for handouts and use more QR codes.
  • Compile data of questions from public.
  • Repair and/or replace the tents.

The meeting adjourned at 12:11 p.m. Minutes submitted by Brenda Doroski, Secretary.
