Transylvania County Master Gardener Advisory Board of Directors
Monthly Meeting Minutes, March 4, 2024, 11:15 a.m.

Attendees: Maryann Mickewicz, Martha Mayberry, Lani Leary, Cindy Decker, Mary Miller, Phyllis Cumings, Lynn Bartosh, Brenda Doroski, Bart Renner, Betsy (remote from OR), Nancy Carroll, Mary Ellen Farley (final 15 minutes)

A. Welcome And Call to Order. Mary called the meeting to order at 11:17 a.m.

B. Finance Report
 Phyllis reported a current balance of $6777.16
 Garden leads have provided anticipated financial needs.
o Review and discuss next month to determine amount $ available to put in a CD.

C. Review/Approve February Minutes – Lynn motion to approve; Martha 2nd; all agreed.

D. Basics of Gardening in Transylvania
 Maryann reported that 28 community members participated; and it went very well. She thanked presenters and EMGV who helped with snacks, registration and “Ask A MG” table.
 One result was an EMGV transfer from Moore County.

E. County Class Update
 Bart reported that there are now 9 trainees in the class — one missed 3 classes which is too much make up; another trainee has missed 2 classes due to chronic health condition.
 The class will be visiting the research station this week.
o Mary Ellen (class mentor) has arranged garden tours for the new class and leads on March 12th (Silvermont 11:15 a.m.) and 15th (Pisgah Ranger Station 11:15 a.m.).
 Bart has taken them to the library rain garden. It was suggested to show them the rain garden development video and/or send them Bob’s U-Tube video.

F. Spring Symposium Update
 Maryann reported that the Brevard Music Center (BMC) Searcy Hall has been booked. BMC will set up the room on Friday morning (March 15) and EMGV will decorate in the afternoon. 74 tickets have been sold to date. The aim is 125-150. It will continue to be promoted on social media.
o A suggestion was made to put up signage to help people find Searcy Hall. Brenda will email Maryann a map of BMC that could be included in the registration reminder email.

G. Farmers Market Activities Update
 Lynn purchased/donated materials for a kids’ activity to make caterpillars and butterflies. Phyllis is working on a seed germination activity
o A suggestion was made to borrow the insect display cases from the Research Center for the insect market day. Bart agreed to pick them up.

H. Farmers Market Sign-Up Sheet
 Maryann and Bart shared an email communication chain sharing concern about the farmer’s market sign-up process and Brenda’s response to Bart with the notes from the October 2023 board meeting.
o Bart will redo the sign-up sheet to include all slots from April to October and communicate the why and how of this year’s sign-up process. Cindy D. volunteered to review the sign-up sheet and communicate with those who may sign up for more than 2 slots.
o Bart will develop separate sign-ups for Gorges and Riverfest so as not to confuse folks.

I. Plans for an EMG Spring Tea
 Phyllis and Maryann proposed hosting a spring tea for EMGV on Friday, June 21 at the Mary C. Jenkins Center. The rental fee is approximately $100. There was interest in and support for this activity.

J. Plant Sale Update
 Maryann has confirmed the space with Ingles for Saturday, May 11.
Maryann will send out sign-up sheet. Set-up and collection of plants will take place on Friday, May 10.
 Cindy G. has created a list of pollinator plants to purchase and sell from Carolina Native Nursery, along with a flyer marketing the pollinator census in August.

K. Field Trip Updates – Arboretum and Pearson/Melrose Falls
 Both of the Arboretum visits (Fri, April 12 and Wed, May 1) are full (20 participants).
 Thirteen EMGV have signed up to participate in the Pearson and Melrose Falls wildflower hike on March 27. There is space for 20 participants. Maryann will continue to market it in the TransPlanter.

L. Southern Highlands Reserve Board Fieldtrip
 The board will visit the Southern Highlands Reserve (1 hour drive) on Tuesday, June 18th, 10:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. Bring your own water, snacks and lunch. Carpool or park at nature gate. More info will provide closer to date.

M. EMGV Shirts – free? Color/Style?
o Deferred discussion to next month.

N. Silvermont Garden Transition Plan
 Mary Ellen shared that easy perennials, annuals and natives will be planted in 3 beds.
o Cindy D. suggested sweet potatoes would be an easy and prolific vegetable to plant in the square middle bed (7×7). They need to cure 7-10 days after harvest (in hot place like trunk of car). Pitch Pine Farm has extra slips they may be willing to donate.
o Lani will start herbs and lavender.
o The blueberries and blackberries need pruning. Bart will add sulfur and arrange for selective pruning.
o What is the status of the garden meeting feedback?

 Signup sheets from luncheon have been typed; Maryann will send to garden leads.
