Collapse ▲The Transylvania County Master Gardener Volunteers are excited to announce a series of four free Demonstration Garden Tours, offering the public a unique opportunity to explore diverse gardening practices and learn from experienced volunteers. The first tour kicks off at the Allison-Deaver House on Wednesday, June 18th, from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.
Master Gardener Volunteers will be on hand at the Allison-Deaver House to provide guided tours of the newly relocated demonstration gardens and answer your gardening and plant questions.
The Allison-Deaver House gardens, originally focused on historically used medicinal and dye plants, faced challenges from encroaching black walnut trees and their plant-stunting chemical, juglone. In 2024, the gardens were moved to a new, sunnier location near the parking lot accessed from NC 280. The new design emphasizes “Useful Plants,” featuring labels that identify plants for their historical dye or medicinal uses. Visitors will discover how plants once considered “weeds,” like lady’s bedstraw, Galium verum, served vital purposes in earlier days, from mattress stuffing to red dye.
These revitalized gardens also prioritize native pollinators, featuring a variety of plants with staggered flowering times to support local insect populations. The Allison-Deaver gardens are an ideal spot to participate in the Great Southeast Pollinator Census citizen-scientist program on August 22-23, and information about the census will be available during the tour.
“We’re thrilled to share these evolving gardens with the community,” said Transylvania County Extension Agent Bart Renner. “Whether you’re interested in historical plants, sustainable gardening, or simply want to learn more about the incredible biodiversity around us, these tours offer something for everyone.”
The Allison-Deaver House itself will also be open for self-guided tours during the garden tour hours, with members of the Transylvania County Historical Society available to answer questions and provide details on scheduling guided tours.
The Allison-Deaver House is located at 2753 Asheville Highway, Pisgah Forest. The entrance to the parking lot is on the left of Highway 280, just north of the US 64 intersection.
The Master Gardeners will host three more demonstration garden tours throughout the summer:
Rain Gardens at the County Library: Tuesday, June 24th, 9:30 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.
Gardens at Silvermont Park: Wednesday, July 10th, 9:30 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.
Pollinator Gardens at the Pisgah Forest Ranger Station: Thursday, July 21st, 9:30 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.
All four tours are free and open to the public.
