A man smiling from under a display tent.It is early January and you have just put the last of the Christmas decorations away. The temperatures outside hit the mid 40’s and you are thinking spring is arriving early. Well perhaps not this year with the very cold January weather, but you get the meaning. The next question is “When can I start planting seeds?”  Steve Matadobra will talk about how we can get started with this task. This presentation is sponsored by the Extension Master Gardener℠ Volunteers of Transylvania County and is part of the monthly program of talks and demonstrations that will interest Master Gardeners, amateur gardeners, and the public at large.

Steve will give a presentation on indoor seed starting 101. This will be a basic approach to indoor seed starting and will include a timeline, equipment (lighting, heat pads, growing trays, etc), location and space requirements, watering and soil requirements, thinning and transplanting, and tips for seed starting success. Even if you think you have got one aspect of this down pat there is sure to be a topic here that could use a refresher. Learn about an inexpensive way to get plants going early and benefit from the large variety of seeds available on the market.

Steve is a certified Master Gardener with Transylvania County, President of the Transylvania County Bird Club, and an avid nature and wildlife photographer. He is also a council member of the Transylvania Natural Resource Council. Steve is retired from active duty with the US Coast Guard and now lives in Pisgah Forest with his wife Whitney who is a mountain bike skills instructor and coach.

The talk is sponsored by the Transylvania County Extension Master Gardeners and will be on Tuesday February 11th, from 10 to 11.00 a.m., doors open at 9.30 a.m. The talk will be held in the Rogow Room at the Transylvania County Library at 212 S. Gaston St, Brevard. All are welcome to attend this free event. Telephone 828-884-3109 for any questions.
