Growing and Caring for Succulent Plants, a talk by Katie King
For those looking for something a bit different in their gardens and homes, Katie King of Barry Farms in Mills River will present a talk on growing and caring for succulent plants. The talk is sponsored by the Extension Master Gardener℠ Volunteers of Transylvania County and is part of the monthly series of talks and demonstrations that will interest Master Gardeners, amateur gardeners, and the public at large.
Succulent plants have leaves and stems that are thickened and fleshy to retain water in dry climates. Although we certainly do not live in a dry climate here in Transylvania County, many types of succulents will grow well here. Succulents are wonderful ornamental plants because of their striking and unusual appearance, as well as their ability to thrive with relatively little care. They are often overlooked when planning our gardens or looking for houseplants, but after attending this program, you’ll certainly see the benefits of adding them to your garden.
During the program, Katie will discuss how to grow succulents successfully. She will review popular varieties, the best growing conditions, and how to care for them. Additionally, she will demonstrate how to make a live succulent wreath while discussing the best propagation practices.
Katie King helps her parents run Barry Farm in Mills River, a small family farm specializing in flowers and herbs. Katie was originally a high school mathematics teacher but for the last several years she has joined her family full time on the farm and in the nursery. She is looking forward to sharing her knowledge and joy of succulents at this event.
The talk is sponsored by the Extension Master Gardener℠  Volunteers of Transylvania County,  and will be on Tuesday June 11th, from 10 to 11 a.m., doors open at 9.30 a.m. The talk will held in the Board of Elections Conference Room at 150 S. Gaston Street in Brevard. All are welcome to attend this free event. Telephone 828-884-3109 for any questions.
