June

District Activity Day

Date: June 14th
Ages: 8-18
Location: Western Carolina University
Cost: Free
Regional competitive presentation, demonstration,
and talent show event. Awards and opportunity to
compete at state are given to top-placing
individuals.
Must qualify at County Activity Day May 18th to
participate. Contact Sarah for more info.

Kids & Chefs

Dates: June 17th-21st
Time: 9:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m.
Ages: 11-15
Location: Cooperative Extension Office
Cost: $75
For budding chefs and home cooks alike this five
day program will teach youth valuable cooking skills
in partnership with local chefs. Topics include knife
skills, food safety, meal planning, meal preparation,
and more! This year’s theme is all things Italian!
Registration cost includes lunch each day.

West District Horsemanship Clinic
Unmounted Activities

Dates: June 17th-18th
Ages: 5-18 (geared towards beginners)
Location: WNC Ag Center
Cost: $90
No horse necessary! This clinic is for those who are
interested in learning more about horses and
horsemanship. Activities include grooming, stall
cleaning, leading, mane and tail braiding, and more.

scholarship opportunities.

District Horsemanship Clinic- Mounted Activities

Dates: June 17th-19th
Ages: 5-18
Location: WNC Ag Center
Cost: $90
Bring your horse and spend three days learning from
equine professionals in your discipline. All levels
welcome from beginner to advance. Youth 5-7 must
have a parent/guardian present for all three days.
Ages 8-18 may have a parent/guardian or a 4-H
approved volunteer chaperone.

Seeds to Sprouts

Date: June 27th
Time: 9:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m.
Ages: 5-7
Location: Silvermont Park
Cost: Free
Dig-in to the magical world of plants and learn how
they grow from soil to stalk. Activities include plant
dissection, story time, crafts, and more. Dress for the
outdoors and bring a sack lunch for a picnic in the
park!

Blooms to Bees

Date: June 28th
Time: 9:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m.
Ages: 8-12
Location: Silvermont Park
Cost: Free
Unearth the world of plants and pollinators by
spending a day in the park. Build a bee robot, dissect
plants, and more. Youth should pack a lunch and
dress for outdoor activities.

July

Make and Take Fair Exhibits

Dates: July 1st and July 2nd
Time: 9:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.
Ages: 5-18
Location: Cooperative Extension Office
Cost: $20
Learn a new skill and craft a masterpiece that you
can exhibit at the Mountain State Fair. Example
activities include leather stamping, recycled crafts,
and more. Activities will vary based on age/skill
level.
Both days will be the same crafts.

Camp at Betsy Jeff Penn Center

Dates: July 7th-12th
Ages: 8-17
Location: Reidsville, North Carolina
Cost: $535-$585
Spend a week at residential camp with youth from
across the state. Activities include archery, rock
climbing, kayaking, crafts, and more. Transportation
provided. Limited scholarships may be available.
All camp spots are full for 2024. Registration for
2025 opens in the fall of 2024. To be put on the
waiting list for 2024 or to be added to the list for
2025 please reach out to Sarah.

4-H Congress

Dates: July 22nd-26th
Ages: 13-18
Location: Raleigh, North Carolina
Cost: $250-$500
Join 4-H’ers from across the state for a week of
fellowship and fun. Activities include workshops,
state officer elections, honor club tapping, service
project, talent show, dance, and more!
Transportation and scholarships may be available.

Life Skills Superheroes- Cloverbuds

Date: July 24th
Time: 9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m.
Ages: 5-7
Location: Cooperative Extension Office
Cost: Free
Collect new superpowers in four areas: head, heart,
hands, and health and become a life skills superhero!
Hands-on activities will focus on a variety of topics
like social skills, personal health, emergency
preparation, etiquette, home economics, and more.

Life Skills Level-up- Juniors

Date: July 25th
Time: 9:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m.
Ages: 8-12
Location: Cooperative Extension Office
Cost: Free
Boost your head, heart, hands, and health stats so
you are ready for whatever life sends your way.
Topics include social skills, personal health,
emergency preparation, etiquette, home economics,
and more. Youth should bring a sack lunch.

Ecology and Me

Date: July 29th
Time: 8:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m.
Ages: 8-12
Location: Gorges State Park
Cost: $15
Explore the wonders of forest ecology in the heart of
our very own temperate rainforest. Activities will be
led with the help of a park ranger and will include
things like hiking, tree and plant ID, and leave no
trace. Youth should bring a sack lunch and dress for
the outdoors. Transportation will be provided from
the Extension Office with an optional pickup/drop
off in Rosman.

4-H20: Water Conservation, Quality
and Stewardship

Date: July 30th
Time: 8:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m.
Ages: 13-18
Location: Gorges State Park
Cost: $15
Deep dive into the science and protection of one of
our most valuable resources. Activities will be led in
part by Assistant Professor Dr. Destini Petitt from
Brevard College and will include things like hiking,
collecting/observing water samples, and more. Youth
should bring a sack lunch and dress for the outdoors.
Transportation will be provided from the Extension
Office with an optional pickup/drop-off in Rosman.

August

Agriculture and Animal Science
Career Exploration Tour

Dates: August 6th
Time: 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m.
Ages: 11-18
Location: Cooperative Extension Office
Cost: $20
Spend a day touring local farms and businesses,
discover what it takes to pursue a career in
agriculture or animal science, and learn what you
can do now to prepare for your future! Final tour
route is TBD but possible stops include: The farm at
Rosman High school, a calf/cow operation, a
boarding and training horse farm, a veterinary
clinic, the Mountain Horticultural Research Station,
and more. Transportation is provided from the
Cooperative Extension Office in Brevard. Youth
should dress for the outdoors and bring a sack
lunch.

YouthVoice

Dates: August 9th-10th
Ages: 14-18
Location: Forsyth County , North Carolina
Cost: Free
Build your college resume and your leadership skills
by representing Transylvania County 4-H as a
YouthVoice delegate at the annual North Carolina
County Commissioners Conference. At the
conference, delegates will attend leadership
workshops with their peers from across the state and
then wrap up the conference with a sit-down
breakfast with Transylvania County Commissioners.
All food, transportation, and accommodations are
covered. Transportation is provided. Delegate will be
expected to attend a commissioner meeting prior to
the conference and will be asked to briefly speak at
a commissioner meeting after they attend.
