Mary Miller, Extension Master Gardener VolunteerSome people can be intimidated by the idea of making their own compost. It is too hard, I may do it wrong, will it really work, are all questions that flash through our minds. But like anything else if we learn the basics we can start off with a small scale composing set up and be very successful. Mary Miller will help ally these fears with her talk on Backyard composting, how to make ‘black gold’. The talk is sponsored by the NC State Extension Master Gardener℠ volunteers of Transylvania County and is part of the monthly program of talks and demonstrations that will interest Master Gardeners, amateur gardeners, and the public at large.

Recycling food and other organic waste into compost provides a range of environmental benefits, including improving soil health, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, recycling nutrients and producing a homemade mix that will enhance our soil. Mary Miller will talk about what is compost, why we should compost, what goes into the compost making mix, what happens when all these goodies start to interact, potential problems, when is it ready and how to use the resulting ‘black gold’.

Mary Miller is originally from New York State, where she began a life-long deep love and respect for nature. Shortly after retiring from a career in IT Project Management in 2018, she moved to Pisgah Forest and completed an MS in Environment and Sustainability. Her capstone project was on community composting, with the Rice Street Community Garden as her pilot project. She is currently working as a Community Engagement and Education Associate with Conserving Carolina, under the auspices of AmeriCorps Project Conserve, and loving every minute of it. She is also an Extension Master Gardener volunteer in Transylvania County and never met a plant she didn’t love. Until she learned about invasives, both native and non-native, that is! As a volunteer, she co-leads the compost demonstration site at Silvermont. She enjoys hiking, gardening, reading, cooking, and spending time with her family in her leisure time.

The talk is sponsored by the Extension Master Gardener volunteers of Transylvania County and will be on Tuesday, October 10th, from 10 to 11.00 a.m., doors open at 9.30 a.m. The talk will held in the Community Services Building Conference Room at 106 E. Morgan St., Brevard. All are welcome to attend this free event. Telephone 828-884-3109 for any questions.
