There are still things to do in the garden in Transylvania County in August, just be sure not to spend too much time in the heat, wear sunscreen and hat, stay hydrated and don’t forget your insect repellent.

To help you keep up with all that is going on, we’ve put together a list of gardening tasks to do now with links for more information on each topic. Fruits
Prune the fruiting canes of raspberry and blackberry plants after harvest is over. Blackberries and Raspberries
Continue spray program on fruit trees and bunch grapes. Fruit Tree Spray Guidelines
Keep weeds in check. Weed in cloudy weather or in the cool of the evening.
Fertilize strawberries with nitrogen this month. Strawberry Grower Guide
Spray peach and nectarine tree trunks at the end of August for peach tree borers. Peachtree Borer Information

Vegetables
Continue fertilizing vegetable plants.
Plant the following fall vegetable plants this month: beets, Chinese cabbage, cucumber, kale, kohlrabi, lettuce, mustard, radish, rutabaga, spinach, squash, and turnip. A Beginner’s Guide to Vegetable Gardening
Monitor vegetables for insects and diseases, treat as needed. Vegetable pests
Keep weeds in check. Weed in cloudy weather or in the cool of the evening.
Spray vegetables with fungicide if signs of fungus are present.
Watch for blossom-end rot on tomatoes. Vegetable Diseases
Make certain vegetable gardens receive at least 1″ of water per week. Water early in the day.
Dig Irish potatoes this month when the foliage has died back completely. Harvesting Potatoes

Shrubs
Do not prune spring-flowering shrubs. How to Prune Specific Plants
Continue with rose care program.
Monitor shrubs for insects and diseases. Treat if needed.

Trees
Monitor trees for insects and diseases. Treat if needed.
Prune “bleeder” trees including maple, dogwood, birch and elm. Pruning trees and shrubs

Perennials
Deadhead perennials to encourage blooms.
Divide and transplant iris and daylilies after they finish flowering. Dividing Perennials

Annuals
Monitor for insects and diseases. Treat if needed.

Lawns
Keep cool season grasses mowed to 3 inches.
Treat lawns for grubs using recommended insecticides.
Prepare cool season lawn areas for mid to late month seeding.

Houseplants
Stop watering amaryllis and allow them to go dormant for winter blooming.

Fertilize.

Miscellaneous
Spray herbicide on poison ivy, honeysuckle and kudzu.
Build a compost bin.
Continue watering favorite landscape plants and vegetable garden if dry weather persists. Watering plants
