Living in the Mountains Series FlyerSession 1: Wells/Septic

Transylvania County Environmental Health will deliver a presentation on septic tank systems and drinking water wells including a quick guide to help folks understand their basic functions and maintenance requirements.
This information may be especially important to those who have been served by a municipal sewer system and/or public water system in the past. Bring your questions and we’ll sort through the myths and urban legends to provide you with the most up-to-date information on file.

Session 2: Radon Mitigation

Did you know radon levels in Western North Carolina are generally higher than elsewhere in the state, particularly in the mountains? Erin Massey, N.C. Cooperative Extension Family and Consumer Sciences Agent, will also discuss radon in your home including radon testing methods and mitigation options.

Session 3: Planning & Planting for Erosion

Sooner or later, gravity catches up to everything, and that could include your soil if you’re not careful! Here in Transylvania County, soil is actually the major contaminant in our local rivers and streams, and there is something you can do about it! In this presentation, we’ll talk about strategies to prevent soil erosion through landscaping, hardscaping, terracing and other strategies. Presented by Bart Renner, N.C. Cooperative Extension Horticulture Extension Agent.

Session 4: Identifying and Managing Invasive Species

Are Bradford Pears really that bad? What is the best way to prevent kudzu on my property? How do I even identify an invasive species? If you have these questions or other questions regarding the identification and control of invasive species, join Bart Renner, N.C. Cooperative Extension Horticulture Extension Agent to learn more.

Session 5: Recreational Opportunities for Older Adults

Transylvania County is a haven for outdoor recreational enthusiasts, including mountain bikers, rock climbers, and kayakers. However, some older residents may prefer other recreational activities. Erin Massey, N.C. Cooperative Extension Family and Consumer Science Agent, will present recreational options for older adults, including both organized and independent activities, inside and outside.
