Summer Fun Dates

June

West District Horsemanship Clinic – Unmounted Activities

Dates: June 16th – June 17th
Ages: 5-18 (geared towards beginners)
Location: WNC Ag Center
Cost: $90
No horse necessary! This clinic is for those who are interested in learning more about horses and horsemanship. Activities include grooming, stall cleaning, leading, mane and tail braiding, and more.

West District Horsemanship Clinic – Mounted Activities

Dates: June 16th – June 17th
Ages: 5-18
Location: WNC Ag Center
Cost: $90
Bring your horse and spend three days learning from equine professionals in your discipline. All levels welcome from beginner to advance. Youth 5-7 must have a parent/guardian present for all three days. Ages 8-18 may have a parent/guardian or a 4-H approved volunteer chaperone.

District Activity Day

Date: June 21st
Ages: 5-18
Location: AB Tech Community College
Cost: Free
Regional competitive presentation, demonstration, and talent show event. Awards and opportunity to compete at state are given to top-placing individuals.
Must qualify at County Activity Day May 17th to participate. Contact Sarah for more info.

Kids & Chefs

Dates: June 23rd – June 27th
Time: 9:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m.
Ages: 11-15
Location: Cooperative Extension Office
Cost: $75
For budding chefs and home cooks alike this five day program will teach youth valuable cooking skills in partnership with local chefs. Topics include knife skills, food safety, meal planning, meal preparation, and more! This year’s theme is eating the rainbow! Registration cost includes lunch each day.

July

Camp at Betsy Jeff Penn Center

Dates: July 6th – July 11th
Ages: 8 -17
Location: Reidsville, North Carolina
Cost: $545 – $585
Spend a week at overnight camp with youth from across the state. Activities include archery, rock climbing, kayaking, crafts, and more. Limited transportation and scholarships offered. Application and more information can be found at: Residential Camp Applications due April 1st.

River Rangers

Dates: July 14th – July 18th
Times: 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.
Ages: 8 -13
Location: Varies
Cost: $50
Spend a week creek stomping, exploring streams, and learning about river stewardship alongside a professor of environmental studies from Brevard College. Participants will be introduced to scientific fieldwork, natural resource preservation, and how to conduct/share research. Includes a kayak trip on the last day. 

Cloverbud Camp: 4-H on the Range

Dates: July 21st – July 24th
Times: 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.
Ages: 5 – 7
Location: Cooperative Extension Office
Cost: Free
Yeehaw! Round up your ponies and join 4-H for four days of fun in this western themed camp for Cloverbuds. Each day participants will engage in crafts, make snacks, and read stories to learn about 4-H and how to use their heads, hearts, hands, and health to make the best better!

4-H Congress

Dates: July 21st – July 25th
Ages: 13 – 18
Location: Raleigh, North Carolina
Cost: $250 – $500
Join 4-H’ers from across the state for a week of fellowship and fun. Activities include workshops, state officer elections, honor club tapping, service project, talent show, dance, and more! Transportation and scholarships may be available.

Around the World with 4-H and El Centro

Dates: July 28th – August 1st
Ages: 8 – 13
Location: El Centro, Brevard
Cost: Free
Travel the globe without leaving home in this exciting new camp. Participants will spend each day exploring the culture and traditions of a new country through food, art, dance, language, and more.

August

Veterinary Science Camp

Dates: August 4th – August 7th
Ages: 13 – 15
Location: Varies
Cost: $50
For all aspiring veterinarians and veterinary technicians. Join us for a four day hands-on introduction to the industry. Participants will learn about handling, safety, basic veterinary science skills, and more by working with both large and small animals.

Youth Voice

Dates: August 21st – August 22nd
Ages: 14 – 18
Location: Pitt County, North Carolina
Cost: Free
Build college resume and leadership skills by representing Transylvania County 4-H as a delegate at the annual North Carolina County Commissioners Conference. Delegates will attend leadership workshops with peers from across the state and enjoy a breakfast with Transylvania County Commissioners. All food, transportation, and accommodations are provided. Delegate will be expected to attend and speak at a commissioner meeting prior to the conference.
