Our aim in starting to create a beautiful garden is often to give ourselves and visitors an attractive landscape to wander through and admire. But we can easily expand that early vision by including native plants that in turn provide an environment that also attracts birds, butterflies, and other wildlife. Clay Wooldridge and Stephanie Bradley will bring us ideas on how to develop our own natural habitats for both native plants and animals. The talk is sponsored by the Master Gardener℠ volunteers in Transylvania County and is part of the monthly program of talks and demonstrations that will interest Master Gardener℠ volunteers, amateur gardeners, and the public at large.

Clay and Stephanie will be sharing their ideas on how we can all support local animals through our garden spaces and around our homes through the development of natural habitats that support native flora and fauna. We can learn how to support local animals, anything from hummingbirds to Monarch butterflies to a variety of mammals and reptiles. When you plant the native plant species that wildlife depends on, you create a habitat and begin to restore your local environment. We can add water, and food by providing nectar, seeds, nuts, fruits, berries, pollen, and insects. We can provide places for birds and animals to find shelter in bad weather or to hide from predators. This type of environment will also add to your own enjoyment and is a great example of using sustainable practices.

Clay Wooldridge is the Education Director at FIND Outdoors formerly the Cradle of Forestry Interpretive Association. They maintain and operate outdoor recreation and education across the local area. Clay is a former classroom teacher and master wilderness instructor. In addition, he is an avid fisherman and musician who lives living in the Brevard community. Stephanie Bradley is the Cradle of Forestry Education Manager. Stephanie has worked in major zoos across the US and lived in Africa where she worked with Cheetahs! Stephanie’s commitment to conservation education is obvious through the years she has spent bringing the natural world closer to students of all ages.

The talk is sponsored by the Master Gardener℠ volunteers in Transylvania County on Tuesday, July 12th, from 10 to 11 a.m. and will be held in the Board of Elections Conference Room at 150 S. Gaston St., Brevard. The public is most welcome and there is no charge. Light refreshments will be served starting at 9.30 a.m. Telephone 828-884-3109 for any questions.
