The NC State Extension Master Gardener℠ program of Transylvania County, is pleased to announce a public presentation, “Bonsai – A Representation of a Tree Evoking a Scene in Nature,” on Tuesday, February 10th. The session will be led by NC State Extension Master Gardener℠ volunteer Rodney Holcomb.

The program will be held from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM in the Rogow Room of the Transylvania County Library, located at 212 S. Gaston St. in Brevard. This event is free and open to the community.

The Art of the Miniature

Bonsai is more than just growing small trees; it is a meticulous craft that blends horticulture with artistic expression. Attendees will gain a comprehensive overview of the practice, ranging from its rich history to practical modern-day care, tailored to a novice bonsai enthusiast. Key topics will include: Aesthetics: Identifying tree species, styles, and selecting the proper pots. Technical Care: Soil composition, watering, and fertilization. Maintenance: Training techniques such as wiring and pruning, as well as essential tool recommendations.

About the Speaker

Rodney Holcomb brings a lifelong passion for nature to his work as a Master Gardener. A veteran gardener since 1990, Holcomb previously honed his skills in the challenging clay soils of Dallas, Texas, focusing on native species.

Prior to his retirement to Brevard in 2019, Holcomb had a distinguished professional career in public health and the pharmaceutical industry. He was a founding member and Executive Director of AIDS Arms, Inc. in Texas and later served in various leadership roles at Merck Pharmaceuticals in HIV, Women’s Health, and Oncology. Now a resident of Brevard, he and his spouse of 35 years, Eric, dedicate their time to gardening and the outdoors.
