Learn about the plants used for food and medicine by early inhabitants of the Southern Appalachian mountains with Certified Traditional Herbalist Laura Sperry. Sperry will discuss the origins and influences, and historical changes in approaches to medicine, and highlight several traditionally used plants.
Sperry is a Certified Traditional Herbalist and Certified Clinical Herbalist. She earned her certifications through three progressively advanced courses through Appalachia School of Holistic Herbalism over the course of 7 years. She has taught classes on traditional plant medicine, led plant walks, and shared her knowledge of Appalachian Folk Medicine in the western North Carolina region at libraries, with school groups, at folk festivals, for social organizations, and at national historic sites. She is currently the Local History Librarian for Transylvania County Library.
