Description:

The Hemlock Restoration Initiative will demonstrate and explain a variety of methods to treat hemlocks available to all landowners in North Carolina. This day-long workshop will give participants hands-on practice assessing and chemically treating hemlocks. Attendees will gain valuable knowledge about managing hemlocks on their own properties and, in the process, the trees at this historic home will receive protection from the deadly, non-native hemlock woolly adelgid for up to 7 years. It’s a win-win! Participants should be prepared to ‘get their hands dirty’ treating trees and bring a brown bag lunch.

RSVP is requested for the 9/9 presentation by Wednesday, 9/5
and is required for the 10/27 workshop by Friday, 10/12
Email info@savehemlocksnc.org or call the HRI office at (828) 252-4783 to sign up.

If you own mature forestland (or a nice wooded backyard) with good soil and drainage, ginseng may be a viable way to produce income from your underutilized woods.

Ginseng is a tricky plant to grow successfully and takes between 7-10 years to reach a size favored by the Asian markets to which it is exported. The market for ginseng has averaged over $750 per dried pound over the last few years. Because of its high value many people have been victims of theft over the years.

On November 30th, Cooperative Extension will be hosting a workshop on wild-simulated ginseng production.
Topics will include:
• Security on private property
• Site selection, soil fertility requirements, & companion plants
• Site preparation
• Planting methods
• Production issues—(pest mitigation & poaching issues)
• The market for ginseng

To register, call or email the Transylvania Extension Office or Bart Renner at Transylvania County Cooperative Extension at 828-884-3109 or bmrenner@ncsu.edu. Space is limited.
The workshop is free, but high quality stratified seed is being sold for $38.00 per ¼ pound. And the Transylvania Master Gardeners will be selling copies of “Growing & Marketing Ginseng and Other Woodland Medicinals.”

Please call or come by the Transylvania County Extension Office to register for workshop sessions. Checks may be made out to Transylvania County CES.

Additional seed is available upon request.
