Feed the Soil First – a presentation by Phil Roudebush

It is all too easy to rush out in the spring and plantvegetables, perennials, shrubs, etc. without paying much attention to thequality of our soil. Like many tasks, good results depend on good preparation,and improving our soil should be one of our first considerations whengardening.  For our April program, Phil Roudebush will present a talkentitled “Feed the Soil First—Using Soil Amendments”.  The talk issponsored by the Transylvania County Extension Master Gardeners and is part ofthe monthly program of talks and demonstrations that will interest MasterGardeners, amateur gardeners, and the public at large. 

Phil will talk about what we should do to amend our heavyclay and nutrient-deficient soils. Soil amendments may include any materialadded and mixed into the soil to improve fertility, physical characteristics,or beneficial microbial activity. This presentation will discuss the basicconcept of soil science and how soil amendments and soil conditioners can beused to improve overall soil quality.

The talk is sponsored by the Transylvania County ExtensionMaster Gardeners and will be on Tuesday, April 11th, from 10 to 11 am and willbe held in the Community Services Building Conference Room at 106 E.
