Spring Flowering Bulbs Talk
The spring is probably the time when our gardening enthusiasm is at its peak. Warmer temperatures and the ability to be out in the garden really puts us in the mood to get out there and do something that will bring color and vibrancy to our gardens. Bulbs are usually the first flowers to appear and there is a huge variety to choose from. But a spring display requires thought and planning in the fall if we want the results that we dream of. Berlis Owen of BOMO Nursery will help our spring garden planning with his talk entitled “Spring Flowering Bulbs” on Tuesday, August 14th. This talk is sponsored by the Transylvania County Extension Master Gardeners and is part of the monthly program of talks and demonstrations that will interest Master Gardeners, amateur gardeners, and the public at large.
In his talk, Berlis will focus spring flowering bulbs such as daffodils, tulips, hyacinths, crocuses, and grape hyacinths to mention just a few. He will discuss what type of bulbs to buy, how to recognize a healthy bulb, how to plant them, what kind of care do they need, and perhaps the most important point when to plant them. Many people, especially in this area where fall temperatures remain warm, plant their bulbs to early. By following a few simple guidelines we can look forward to a wonderful springtime display
Berlis Owen owner of the BOMO Nursery in the Eastatoe Community, and has 20 years of experience in the nursery business. He is a retired science and math school teacher with a lifetime interest in plants of all kinds. In his retirement, he breeds and crossbreeds hundreds of varieties of daylilies at his nursery and is a regular vendor at the Transylvania County Farmer’s Market.
The talk is sponsored by the Transylvania County Extension Master Gardeners and will be on Tuesday, August 14th from 10:00 to about 11:00 am and will be held in the Conference Room at the Community Services Building, 106 E. Morgan St, Brevard. The public is most welcome and there is no charge. This is a great opportunity to hear a local expert speak and will be of interest to new and experienced gardeners. Refreshments will be served starting at 9:30 am giving you an opportunity to meet with other Master Gardeners. Telephone 828-884-3109 for any questions.

If you own mature forestland (or a nice wooded backyard) with good soil and drainage, ginseng may be a viable way to produce income from your underutilized woods.

Ginseng is a tricky plant to grow successfully and takes between 7-10 years to reach a size favored by the Asian markets to which it is exported. The market for ginseng has averaged over $750 per dried pound over the last few years. Because of its high value many people have been victims of theft over the years.

On November 30th, Cooperative Extension will be hosting a workshop on wild-simulated ginseng production.
Topics will include:
• Security on private property
• Site selection, soil fertility requirements, & companion plants
• Site preparation
• Planting methods
• Production issues—(pest mitigation & poaching issues)
• The market for ginseng

To register, call or email the Transylvania Extension Office or Bart Renner at Transylvania County Cooperative Extension at 828-884-3109 or bmrenner@ncsu.edu. Space is limited.
The workshop is free, but high quality stratified seed is being sold for $38.00 per ¼ pound. And the Transylvania Master Gardeners will be selling copies of “Growing & Marketing Ginseng and Other Woodland Medicinals.”

Please call or come by the Transylvania County Extension Office to register for workshop sessions. Checks may be made out to Transylvania County CES.

Additional seed is available upon request.

Description: Casualty Loss and Income Tax Deductions Related to Timber and Landscape Trees
Timber or landscape trees destroyed by recent fires, hurricanes or other storms are “casualty losses” that may allow the property owners to take a deduction on their federal income tax returns. To help timber owners, as well as home owners, who suffered timber or landscape tree damages with their tax reporting, this webinar will focus on the new tax law changes that Congress passed in 2017 that affect the casualty loss deductions starting in the 2018 tax year.
