Rhododendrons in bloom
In May you cannot escape the many different Rhododendrons that flower in this area. And why would you want to! From cultivated gardens to native varieties on the Parkway, we are surrounded by color and beauty that does amazingly well in our climate. Kelly Holdbrooks will present a talk entitled “Rhododendrons” on Tuesday, June 12th. This talk is sponsored by the Transylvania County Extension Master Gardeners and is part of the monthly program of talks and demonstrations that will interest Master Gardeners, amateur gardeners, and the public at large.
In his talk, Kelly will bring her experience from the Southern Highlands Reserve to discuss the different types of Rhododendrons that do well in this area. Size, color, type and your own garden esthetic are all important considerations when planning a new, or expanding an existing planting. Using native cultivars will be an important theme in her talk
With over a decade of experience in Western North Carolina’s vast horticulture, Executive Director Kelly Holdbrooks demonstrates her passion for fostering a human connection with nature by loving the Reserve as she does children. Blooming with laughter and learning, a guided tour with Kelly is a real treat! Kelly’s research in experiential methods and the humanism of nature earned her a Master’s degree in Landscape Architecture, with honors, from the College of Environment & Design at the University of Georgia. She is proud to call Western North Carolina her home.
The talk is sponsored by the Transylvania County Extension Master Gardeners and will be on Tuesday June 12th from 10:15 to about 11:15 am and will be held in the Conference Room at the Community Services Building, 106 E. Morgan St. Brevard. The public are most welcome and there is no charge. This is a great opportunity to hear a local expert speak and will be of interest to new and experienced gardeners. Refreshments will be served starting at 9.30 am and this gives you an opportunity to meet with other Master Gardeners. Telephone 828-884-3109 for any questions.
