Native Mountain Rain Garden Plants for Shady Areas

Plants:

  • Jack in the pulpit
  • Native Columbine
  • Trout Lily
  • Cinnamon Fern
  • Royal Fern
  • Ostrich Fern
  • Wild Ginger
  • Hepatica
  • Trillium (most of the them)
  • Yellow Root
  • Paw-Paw (small tree)
  • Inkberry Holly

 

Other Trees and Shrubs:

  • Pagoda Dogwood
  • Serviceberry
  • Swamp Azalea (fewer flowers is shade is over 70% of the time)
  • Ninebark
  • Native Hydrangea (ie Annabelle)

Tips:

  • Prepare the soil with lots of composted leaves
  • Avoid using many trees as they will increase the shade
