Presentation by Master Gardener Nancy Anderson
While out hiking this summer in the local mountains it seems that mushrooms and other fungi have had a great season. Those who can identify mushrooms harvest them in the wild but identification can sometimes be tricky. Did you know that mushrooms can also be grown at home in a more controlled environment? Nancy Anderson will talk about how this can be accomplished. This presentation is sponsored by the Transylvania County Extension Master Gardeners and is part of the monthly program of talks and demonstrations that will interest Master Gardeners, amateur gardeners, and the public at large.
Nancy will talk about how and why to grow mushrooms by illustrating the life history of mushrooms and the vital links that connect Fungi, Animals, and Plants using short videos from recently published mushroom research. Nutritional information for Shiitake and the carnivorous behavior of useful varieties of Oyster Mushrooms will help the home gardener understand why they may want to grow them. The talk will wrap up with a demonstration of the supplies needed to successfully grow mushrooms on an inexpensive substrate, with tips on pasteurization, inoculation, incubation, fruiting, harvesting, storage, and mulching.
Nancy and her husband, Trevor, have lived in the Sapphire area for 10 years. Her interest in fungi started at Tulane University where, in the ‘70s, she investigated the degradation of leaf litter from forests in Louisiana and Indiana. As part of her degree, using a microscope, she watched fungi from the soil ensnare nematode worms. She is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and Professor Emerita of Biology at Purdue University. More recently, based on her experience as a hobby beekeeper, she has been caring for beehives that are thriving. “Nancy’s Woodland Honey” was awarded 1st prize for Western North Carolina in 2022 for the light honey category. Since 2023 she has been a Transylvania County Extension Master Gardener volunteer. She is passionate about the time she now dedicates to launch the newest chapter of the North Carolina Native Plant Society, as co-chair of the Oconee Bell Chapter.
The talk is sponsored by the Transylvania County Extension Master Gardeners and will be on Tuesday October 8th, from 10 to 11.00 a.m., doors open at 9.30 a.m. The talk will be held in the Community Services Conference Room, 106 E. Morgan St, Brevard. All are welcome to attend this free event. Telephone 828-884-3109 for any questions.
