Grandparents Raising Grandchildren

Did you know that millions of grandparents have returned to the role of parent? This is true!

And it isn’t just the grandparents – it may be other relatives who have stepped up to fill the parenting roll. The grandparents and other relatives have stepped in to breach the gap and rescue children from faltering families, drugs, physical abuse and violent crime.

The stress that grandparents have as repeat parents is quite different from the routine kinds of stress accompanying raising children. Grandparents recognize the critical role they are expected to play in the re-parenting of their grandchildren, and importantly, they sincerely want to succeed.

If you are in this group – either a grandparent or other relative – you are invited to attend a meeting on July 21, at 1 p.m., at North Carolina Cooperative Extension, Henderson County Center, Jackson Park. This is an organizational meeting to establish a support group for Grandparent Raising Grandchildren (or other relatives raising children who are not their own).

At this meeting, you will meet others who are in the same situation. Bring your questions, ideas and thoughts about how you can benefit from this kind of support.

If you have questions or need more information, please contact Renay Knapp, Family and Consumer Science Extension Agent, at 828/697-4891 or email renay_knapp@ncsu.edu.
