The N.C. Cooperative Extension of Watauga County is offering a series of free classes in conjunction with our annual spring fruit plant sale.

On Wednesday, March 11, 2020, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., join us at the Agricultural Conference Center at 252 Poplar Grove Road in Boone for an Apple Growing Short Course for Homeowners. Learn about all of the basics of apple growing including planting, soil fertility, training a young tree, deer protection, and dealing with pest and disease issues.

On Thursday, March 19, 2020, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., also at the Agricultural Conference Center, there will be a course on Growing Blackberries, Raspberries, and Blueberries in the Home Garden. Topics that will be covered include planting, fertility, plant selection, training, trellising, and handling common problems.

The third class will be held Friday, March 20, 2020, from 3 to 4:30 p.m. for a Hands-on Blueberry Pruning Workshop. We will be meeting at a local farm (address given upon registration) to learn how to renovate and prune mature blueberry shrubs through demonstration and hands-on practice. Some pruning tools will be available but you are welcome to bring your own.

These classes are free but we do ask you to register so we know you are coming. You can call our office at (828) 264-3061 to register for all classes and get directions to the blueberry pruning site. Coming up on February 24, 2020, we will host the Small Farms AgriShop at the Watauga County Agricultural Conference Center. See the above link for information and to register for the event. Registration deadline is February 18. This is a free event, includes lunch and you do not need to be a farmer to attend. Topics that will be covered include apple and blueberry production, hemp harvest and post-harvest processing, medicinal herbs, and small ruminant management and nutrition.
