Volunteers at Community Event

EFNEP Educator, Cheri Bennett and Family Consumer Science Agent, Marcus McFarland share information with families about cooking their turkey, donated courtesy of Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina.

In 2019, consider donating your time to volunteer for a worthy cause. In Union County, there are several organizations that welcome volunteers. Volunteering is a great way to strengthen our Union County community, Improve your mental health and happiness, develop friendships, improve self-esteem, and can be a great source of physical exercise.

On Saturday, December 22, 2018, volunteers from N.C. Cooperative Extension, Open Arms Community Outreach, Manna From Heaven, Boggs Paving, and Lynches River Contracting came together at the Union County Agricultural Center to serve more than 250 families. The families received toys, clothes, household items, and non-perishable foods. A special thanks to Second Harvest Foodbank of Metrolina and the Delhaize Food Lion Corp.

Many of the families that received items participate in N.C. Cooperative Extension’s Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP). The classes are held at the Open Arms Community Outreach. Families learn ways to prepare food safely, eat healthy on a budget, and how to incorporate more physical fitness into their everyday lifestyle.
